Friday Five - Holiday Foods

The most Stressful time of the year is here!! And that of course brings the most wonderful foods with it. During a conversation with my sister, I told her that Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve are the two days that I don't stop eating, and I love it!

Today I'm joining Link up with Running on Happy & Fairytales and Fitness for the Friday Five 2.0.

Now, before I keep going, I feel a warning needs to be put here. I do not offer you healthier options on food, and will not tell you to cut your portions... I am simply not that type of blogger. There are many other wonderful bloggers who have those wonderful tips and amazing ideas. You can find them in the link up.... they are awesome!

Is there anybody still reading? Good, thanks! Here are my favorite Holiday foods

1. Tamales-This pockets of deliciousness take all day to make. But they are more than worth the wait. Unfortunately, because mills are not common sights in this country, we have to make them out of corn flour, they are still delicious, but not as moist at the fresh corn ones.

I cover my tamales in mole sauce

2. Mole- this is a thick sauce, there is many different varieties of this sauce in Mexico, but at my parents, we make two types. One is the simple version, with dried peppers, tomatillos, and garlic. The second is dried peppers, a lot of different spices, which include all spice, pepper, salt, almonds, sesame seeds, pumpkin seeds, peanuts. This second Mole is the one we have for Thanksgiving, and it is delicious with Mexican red rice and turkey.

3.  Pozole-this one is a red hominy soup with pork meat. We top this delicious soup with fresh shredded lettuce, lime and fresh chopped onions. It is so delicious! And my Mom only makes it once a year. It's a lot of work.

Step 2 of Poloze, picking the good kernels... there is 3 more steps after this one.

4. Chocolate Domes-  Any other day of the year, I'm not a huge fan of chocolate, but on the holidays I love those delicious chocolate mousse confections!

5. Wine- Of course Wine is good any time of the year, but it is oh so nice to enjoy two glasses of wine on a weeknight, knowing I don't have to be up at 6:00 am... and I could have that 3rd glass.

  2. That's the problem with really good food, is that it often takes a lot of time and work to prepare! I know that Andrew loves cooking so he doesn't mind putting energy and love into it. Your mom sounds the same. I am definitely coming to your house for the holidays. Mexican food is heaven to our whole family. We LOVE it. Do you have room for 8 more people? Ha ha!

  3. When I lived in Texas I remember tamales being a holiday tradition and remember the ladies all getting together to make them. To be honest, I don't remember actually eating one though! I bet yours are amazing!

In our family desserts are always plentiful around the holidays! We don't make them throughout the year so it's okay, right? ...lol

    1. I know ! That's why I love your blog!!

Maybe it's the pronunciation ... We pronounce the E at the end ... so it doesn't sound like we are eating a Mole. I'm going to save you some, my mom always makes too much.

We switch to Chianti for the winter too! I'm a little excited for Chianti.

  5. I try to not drink too much during the holidays because I end up overeating or indulging too much, so I really Watch my alcohol intake. I also don't decorate as much, refuse parties and simplify my meals to keep the stress at bay.

  6. So many amazing food choices! That chocolate dome looks spectacular!!! Tamales are a favorite, too. My college roommate is Mexican and she used to talk about how at family holidays, everyone would be gathered around the table making tamales together. During the holidays, I can't get enough pumpkin pie. I love it so much that I actually make home-made versions on nearly a year-round basis (thank you, canned pumpkin!) =D

  7. All of these foods look so good! Living in the South, we don't have many of them down here (besides wine, we have a lot of drinking in Charleston). It's neat to see holiday food photos from someone in another region of the US.

Healthy eating and portion control is for January.

My favorite holiday dessert is by far chocolate layer cake. So good!

  10. My husband goes crazy for tamales. And mole. We tried to make a Mexican style Thanksgiving one year but my family was not excited about it. I guess it's not nice to mess with tradition! More wine...

    1. We make tamales the day after thanksgiving, with the left over turkey. My mom tried to make them for thanksgiving, but she ended up hating us all. It is just too much work!
