Throw Back Thursday- High School

Do you remember that weird foreing girl in High School who didn't speak much English, was very quiet and you were sure had no friends... and likely depressed because she wore a lot of black? Yes,? Well, that was me in High School.

I moved her in 1997, and started High School in 10th Grade, I didn't know anybody my first year. I knew a few sentences in English one of them being "I don't speak English" and "Where is the lav?" I used to say lav because I couldn't pronounce the difference between BATHroom and BEDroom.

Here are a few pictures and stories from my time in High School

Me at my locker... or my sister's locker. We would use which ever was closest to the class we were going to. I used to wear this really old glasses, they were super dorky, but I loved them because I couldn't see without them.

Later in 1999, I got contacts. I used to read a lot of Sweet Valley High, and even did a book report on the book I'm holding. Because I didn't know what else to read! and for years I've wanted to send an apology to my High School English teacher, to say I'm sorry for doing a book report on SVH, I didn't know any better and thank you for her patience with me.

I was a fan of N*Sync.... bc I was young and impressionable

I used to work at Ames Department Stores and on my way to Prom I stopped there to see my friend Alex, in the picture we are with Angel, the assistant manager. Fun Fact- my prom date got lost on his way to prom! He didn't make it to prom! Super fun fact: I was so relieved, I didn't really like him.

Yes, I was skinny. NO, I did not have an eating disorder.

Unfortunately he did show up for my Senior Dinner dance. I wore pleather pants and a pleather top... because it was 2000, and we were wild with pleather!

With Jessica, who was the nicest girl to me in HS!

We lived in an apartment on top of an empty store, next to a cheesesteak sandwich shop. I loved the overalls in the picture! I'm still sad about donating them a few years ago.

For graduation, somebody thought it would be funny to line me up with a girl who looked a lot like me... except she was a Track Star who rocked at life. People couldn't tell us apart and thought we were sisters ! I don't even remember her name!

Any regrettable High School fashions?
Anything clothing you miss form HS?
Did you have a doppelganger in HS?

  1. I am so glad you shared this. This is a true testament as to what students of other languages go through in our public school system. I currently teach ESL (English as a second language) and it is much more challenging for older students to catch on to the language. I'm sure your English teacher loved you!

Hmm, as far as fashion mistakes in High school, I don't remember any but I sure wish someone would have told me about tweezing my eyebrows.. I didn't even know that was a thing! ..lol

    1. Meranda, you are my hero!! I didn't know you taught ESL!! I'm going to tell you right now, your students appreciate everything you do for them !! I know I did for my ESL teacher. She was so much more than a teacher, she was our advocate.

    2. Aww, thank you! I have noticed that as an ESL teacher you kind of become "responsible" for those students. When there is an issue with the student even outside of my class the other teachers let me know. If kids don't get their permission slips in on time the other teachers let me know. If kids are short on lunch money, the cafe, lets me know. I do like that they depend on me though. It lets me know that they know someone is in their corner!

  2. Fun throwback Thursday post! It must have been really tough adjusting to a new country at that age. My parents moved to the US when I was a baby so it was much easier for me. I was a big Sweet Valley High fan when I was younger too :)

  3. So I went to a very... shall we say... WHITE high school. Everyone spoke English. There was one black student. Let's just say probably everyone in my home town (except my mom and dad!) are voting for Trump!

You look exactly the same as you look in HS! I used to LOVE Sweet Valley High! I just got rid of all of the ones I owned when I cleaned out our basement though.

    1. Megan,

It feels like until recently, most of central pa has been mostly white. But that is quickly changing !

From what I have read in your blog , your parents are very progressive, and are not fooled by Trumps chatter.

  4. I was the epitome of IDGAF in HS. I was on a local rowing team, unaffiliated with my HS, so most of my friends went to other schools. We had no dress code, so in the winter I wore sweats, usually with my rowing spandex on underneath so I was ready for practice. And in the summer, I wore gym shorts, or just my rowing clothes. Our HS had no AC, we never got snow days (like literally, I NEVER had one in all my years PreK - Senior in HS) but we used to get heat days fairly regularly.

I regret donating overalls. Although, I wore mine when I was younger & I am confident they wouldn't fit anymore. I still loved them.

  6. Ana, I continue to adore all these posts you share with details from your childhood and from growing up. They are fascinating! And I think we have so much in common! I used to read all the Sweet Valley High books, too! And I was the ONLY Asian in my entire high school. My entire town was white, white, white. I'm similar to Meg that probably my entire hometown is voting for Trump, too (blugh). I love your photos, especially your graduation picture - what a classic!!!
