Recovery Week and Runfessions

Hello beautiful world! how is everybody doing today? I'm double dipping on link ups today! I missed Friday's Runfessions because I was off from work, and as much as I tried to read and post while hanging out with Roger, he demanded all of my morning attention. And my afternoon/ evening attention went to my son.

I look total crazy, but I love this picture!

I'm linking up with Marcia for the April Runfessions.

April Runfessions

Also linking up with Holly and Tricia for their Weekly Wrap post.

Anyway, enough with my life ramblings, and on to running/ training ramblings.

Monday- After the Gettysburg Marathon, went to work and had a busy rest day. I went in two hours late, because I didn't want to be rushing to get myself moving in the morning. My son, who on any weekday I have to drag out of bed at 6:50, was up and ready for life at 6:25 am! I let him watch morning cartoons, while I slowly got ready. I only recorded a little over 8,000 steps on my fitbit, but I told myself that it was ok, my count for the day before was 55,000.

After work, I did some light yoga and rolling to ease some of the soreness... while watching Glee.

Tuesday- Baseball and a walk around the field to keep the legs moving.

Playing after the storm

Wednesday and First Runfession- I didn't do well at the recovery stage of a Marathon.

I was feeling very well rested, and my legs were not sore anymore! neither were my hips or my elbow (my imaginary elbow pain, anyway). Told myself that this was to be an easy Zumba week, because Denise has not done a Wicked Wednesday zumba in over a year, and thought myself safe. And the last Wednesday zumba I had done, I barely broke a sweat.

I was very excited, and feeling over confident, then Denise walks in and tells us that she was messing around with the playlist and changed some songs. By the third song, my legs started to feel heavy, and by song 5, my lungs were not happy with me. When it came time for the squat song, my quads were not at all in agreement with any sort of squat, and I ended up doing that song mostly just standing with knees slightly bent. And this song almost killed me.

I was dead tired after 1 hour of zumba! So told myself to calm the fun down, and keep resting.

Thursday - Baseball was cancelled (Thank you, Marathon Rest Gods!) as we had pouring rain at the time practice was to start.

My son learned to ride his bike without training wheels! He was very proud of himself! It really is such an awesome moment!

Learning to Ride his bike!!

Friday- This was our first Friday since December that we didn't have to run a crazy amount of miles on my Friday off! We didn't know what to do with ourselves. So we went to breakfast, and then to lunch. Then we did a light 1 mile walk on the local paved track.

Second Runfession: I don't like buying running magazines. I find that their articles to be out of my budget, dreams, and goals. I will browse them at the grocery store or the book store, but rarely do any of them grab my attention enough to want to take it home. Except for Friday, I let myself be sucked in by Women's Running. I blame you Barnes and Noble! And regretted it when I got home. I read two articles and got bored.

Can't be trusted at Barnes and Noble, picked up a running magazine and ANOTHER book!

Saturday- OMG! I was allowed to be in charge of the dugout for the Saturday baseball game, and I will admit that I LOVED being in charge of all the kids ! I have control issues.

After the baseball game, we went to the park, and played catching, batting and pitching. I want my son to practice those, but at the same time, I want him to still have fun with the game.

Sunday- My mom is back from Mexico! She brought me cookies! We went down to visit her and had a very large plate of Enchiladas, my favorite food! It's all part of my recovery... so I tell myself anyway.

Roger and I dragged ourselves out for a short and easy 2 mile run. I made many different offers to Roger to talk him out of the running. I seriously offered to buy him cookies, ice cream, sushi, even offered the unthinkable ... to make dinner all week! He turned them all down. So we ran.

Light yoga in a random small garden we found in Camp Hill

Third Runfession: One day last month, I spent 85% of my work day reading running blog post, instead of working. It put me behind a whole day... but I enjoyed reading the blogs so much, that I don't at all regret it!

Fourth Runfession: We are going to Penn State for my brother's graduation this Saturday, and I was being a Runhole, and trying to run a 5K before leaving for the graduation. Until I stopped myself, and forced myself to forget about the 5K.

Favorite thing somebody told me this week :
"We now know that you can run from Kennett Square to West Chester, and it would take you almost 5 hours! but we know you can do it!" My sister explaining to my mom how far a Marathon is.

I am completely in love with this song! Found it on Thursday and can't stop listening to it! I find Roco's voice hypnotizing, but I've been in love with Roco for years... so no surprise.

Any random song that you are loving?

What mistakes have you done while recovering?

Comments

  1. My biggest recover mistake is not eating RIGHT after a hard run or race. Sometimes I am just not hungry but that is no excuse!

Besides Zumba, it looks like you made all the right recovery choices! :)

I had to laugh at you being all happy to be in charge of the dugout!! I am in charge of kids ALL day long so when I am not at work, I never ever want to be in charge of anything!

    1. Ja ja !! That is exactly how you know I have issues, I am bleh about baseball, but put me in charge of the dug out and I'm all for telling the kids what to do.

I admire all school teachers ! I started out college wanting to be a teacher, but after one summer of kids ignoring me, I realized it wasn't my calling. The way you go out there and teach kids, with so much patience, love and respect !! You blow me away! I was done with small group of children for the rest of the weekend after Saturday's adventure.

I don't know how you do it, I'm always really hungry after runs! Roger is the same way, he is not hungry after running.

  2. I don't have any recovery advise for you because I have never run a marathon, and the last half I ran was two years ago. However, having a medical background I know that running that type of mileage does affect your muscle, so give them a break. Also HYDRATION.

    1. Thank you for the advice Nicole! Hydration was a challenge, but I kept at it. All advice is always appreciated !

  3. I'm pretty lazy at heart. I like to taper & I like to recover. :) And I only run halfs!

Congrats on your marathon and actually having the energy to keep running the next week!

    1. You are not lazy Judy!! Running half marathons does not make you lazy!

Thank you ! It still feels amazing to say I've done a marathon!

  4. Runhole! You crack me up! It's great to hear you're feeling so good and energetic after your marathon but do be careful. After my first marathon I ramped back up to high mileage too quickly and ended up with ITB issues. Thanks for linking up!

    1. I agree with you Lisa, I get more from Articles than from a magazine ! Maybe it's just my attention span.

  7. Usually my biggest mistake after a marathon is to jump back into running too soon. I'm glad I had my week out of town with my hubs to sightsee. It really helped curb my running temptation!

  8. Congrats to your son on learning to ride his bike without training wheels! Zumba is no joke and I totally relate to the pain of doing the "squat" songs. Wow, does it burn! I don't read running magazines, either. Yay for Penn State and congrats to your brother on his graduation! My husband is a proud Nittany Lion. It's a really beautiful campus! I've been in similar situations where I wanted to run a race the morning of some big event, too, so I completely understand. YAY for the cookies from Mexico - yummy yummy!!!

  9. I love your sister's description of a marathon! It's hard to ease up after training so hard but your body NEEDS that recovery time. LOL on deciding NOT to be a "runhole" - good call!

  10. I runfess I quit reading running magazines too because it seems like the same article over and over and over! I'll also admit I've spent way too much time reading blogs when I was supposed to be doing something else. Shh... After my first marathon, I walked the Disney parks for days. There certainly was no "put your feet up and rest" for me! Hooray for your son's bike riding. That's such a milestone. Thanks for linking with us Ana.

  11. It's great that you were feeling good following your marathon. I've never run one so no good advise from me - post half marathons I like to keep moving, just in a more low-keyed fashion.

  12. I've never heard "runhole" before, but that word is perfect. Hahaha!

I subscribe to Runner's World because I got a really good deal, but I wouldn't pay newsstand price for it.

    1. Raquelita, I saw that one on Instagram, and it sounded very much like when I'm being a jerk to my family to run.

I try to not buy magazines, just based in stand prices, I could buy a coffee with those $5!

  13. What a great idea after your race to be a couple hours late back to work. I really should think about doing that. I'm always so rushed and seems everything takes longer too. Wouldn't it be nice if sometimes you could just take the average of 2 days on your fitbit? It drives me crazy to think after getting in that much activity, it all goes to zero at midnight. #fitbitproblems Oh wow that Zumba does sound intense, fun but intense after a marathon!
Mistakes? Yes I can't seem to do things in moderation. I feel good I think I can tackle anything, then I realize it after it's too late. Womp womp... Thanks for linking up with us.

    1. Tricia, I do wish it would just roll over. It used to drive me crazy that it would roll right back to 0 at midnight. You get me #fitbitproblems.

Oh yes! You must take time off the next day after a big race! My body is already hurting, no need to rush to get to work on time.
