Friday Five- Father's Day Weekend

Happy Friday!! How is your week going?

I'm joining the Friday 5 Link up with  Running on Happy & Fairytales and FitnessThis weekend is Father's Day, and I'm dedicating this Friday Five to my Dad.

Here are 5 awesome facts about my Father.

1. My Dad was supportive of our Education. If you remember, my Mom was very progressive for her time, and always wanted us to focus on our education, rather than on preparing for being somebody's wife. My Dad never fought her on it, even when his own family would pick on him about us not knowing how to make tortillas at the age of 8.

2. My Dad taught me to deal with Car problems... on his own way. My Dad taught us how to drive, showed us how to change the oil (We didn't quite learn it), check tire pressure, fill the tires. So one day when I was in college, my car wouldn't turn on, I called my Dad and his answer still rings in my head "What are you calling me for? I can't fix it. Find somebody to jump your battery and take it to a mechanic!" In talking to my sisters, They each had a similar conversation with them.

3. He taught me to not be afraid to drive anywhere. The first awesome thing was that he taught me to drive... many Mexican fathers do not teach their daughters to drive. But he made me drive in many highways, from here to Mexico and taught me to find a direction, and not be afraid of being in big highways.

4. Eating is good, Eating out is better- My dad LOVES to eat out!! He will never miss an opportunity to eat at a restaurant! My Dad and I could eat our way through any town! Once we were in Mexico together, and my mom happened to be there too. My dad and I went out to breakfast, lunch, snack, snack again and dinner... while my mom at her sisters.

5. Work Hard- Both my Mom and Dad are hard workers. My Dad is semi retired, but still works part-time. I have never met somebody who works as hard as him.... back in 2005, he had shingles, and went to work for 2 weeks, before his job asked him to stay home and rest. If he can go to work with Shingles, I can show up with a headache. I never tell him I have called off work.

Bonus : When I got divorced, I was afraid of telling my Dad. I thought he would be ashamed of me for giving up on my marriage. When I finally told him, he hugged me and told me that he was proud of me for sticking up for myself. He has told my sisters multiple times that he is very proud of me for everything I have done in my life, but specially for not putting up with my ex-husband.

What is one awesome about your Dad?

  3. My dad, for all his faults (and they were big), has an amazing sense of humor, to which I credit mine. He taught me that you can always laugh at the absurd, and that has come in handy so much in my life. The other thing about him is that he loved us to a fault. If someone treated us badly, he'd go all out dad, saying "those bastards!" and that always made me feel so good.

    1. A good sense of humor is a great trait to lean from a Dad!

My Dad has his faults too, and I used to resent him... but many years ago, I figured carrying those resentments weighted too much on me.

  4. I love that your dad taught you so much! My parents divorced when I was 12 and things were very rocky for years before that so I'll just say I learned "what not to do" from the actions of my parents and am very mindful of the example I set for my own kids.
