Looking At The Numbers

As each month ends, my Instagram feed is flooded with monthly mile totals from the awesome people I follow. And each month, I go through the same thoughts "Why are my miles not as high?"

After that, I go through my days and re-examine, where could I have done more miles? Where could I have squeezed one more run? why am I not running that many miles... then somewhere, deep in my brain somebody stands on a chair and starts screaming "STOP TRYING TO COMPARE YOURSELF TO OTHERS!! DO YOUR OWN THING!"

When I look back at my month, and my days I see days full of work, family time, books and running. I only regret not going for a run when I as at my parents the one day, but other than that... my month was awesome. Here are some of my other numbers for July

12 Blog post

An average of 248 hours of sleeping < - I am knocking the sleeping out of the park!

147 hours worked

17 files turned in to the state for audit

6 books read < I got distracted with other things.

138 answered phone calls from my co-worker who has to talk to me about everything he is thinking.... we are both aware that He is a talker, and has to talk his ideas out loud, where I have to think them, and will rarely mention them.

2 new trails hiked

9 hours of talking to my sister on the phone

30 Showers

6 Burritos < that used to be 10 burritos per month. I'm slacking.

I am not doing this post to dis anybody who did more miles than me, not at all! I love and respect every mile that somebody runs. This is a reminder to myself that I am my own person, who has her own goals ... and who can be totally jealous of somebody else's awesomeness.

Do you have any numbers you want to share?
What other numbers were important for you in July?

  1. I love this, Ana! It is so important to not compare ourselves to others! I know a lot of people run way more than me, but I know if I ran that much I would HATE running AND I would be injured and not happy... AND it would take time away from other things I enjoy. I'm sure some people look at my recaps and think the same thing, so the number of miles... it's all relative! I shower twice a day... at LEAST. So I am sad to say I am more than certain that I took MORE than 62 showers in July! However, aside for when I shave my legs (about once a week), I take VERY fast showers, especially since my ones at night are just a rinse off.

    1. Thank you Megan! Now that you say that... I did take way more showers! I shower after running too!

You are right! it's all relative! We each do what we can, and we need more focus on supporting ourselves for those achievements!

  2. This is a great look at your month! Yay for sleep and books :) I always feel a bit down when I see how high other people's numbers are but try to just remember that I'm running for me and as long as I'm happy with how things are going for my current goals, that's all that matters.

Don't feel down, you are doing your thing and enjoying it! What is most important is that We are active and moving!

  3. I think it is so hard to compare yourself to others. We are our own biggest critique. We just have to be happy what we can do, and not what we don't. I have been slacking in the running department as well. This summer has just been so hot a humid. Maybe things will change once it cools off a bit.

    1. You are right, we are our own biggest critic! I was just telling my son that we need to focus on the good things we have, and not dwell on the things we missed out yesterday.

  4. Awe! I LOVE THIS SO MUCH! You are such an incredible woman. Anyway, I wish I could have read 6 books! I could have, if I didn't run so much! And I wish I could have talked to my sister(s) more on the phone. If I had to change 2 things about my month, those are what I would change.
