I Dream of Bread

When I was in college, I wrote a paper about dreams, it was over 15 years ago, but I still remember that one theory that talked about dreams taking you to the feelings, places and memories you craved the most, and the one about unresolved issued that brought anxiety. At the current moment, I have three re-ocurring dreams that are a mix of anxiety and places I miss.

"I overslept for work"
In the time that I have worked at my office, I have overslept my fair amount of times, but have managed to arrive to work barely on time. But my brain likes to play tricks with my mind, and about once a month, right after stressing out about an audit or a file review, I dream that my alarm goes off and I turn it off and go back to sleep, and wake up 4 hours later, realizing that it's 10:30 and I didn't go to work. In my dream, the list of reasons of why I'm not at work on time start to roll off my brain... I had a family emergency and couldn't bother with calling the office, something happened to my car and I lost my phone.

"I missed the entire semester and showed up for the final" dream
This has become less re-ocurring as other worries take over my brain. But I used to dream that I showed up to my Anthropology class (or Statistics) on the first day, then returned the next day and I had missed the entire semester, and have to take the final. Fortunately, I at least showed up wearing clothes.

"Bread" dream
Some version of this dream has been re-ocurring for at least 18 years. When I lived in Mexico, we used to visit this two awesome bakeries, I love my carbs and my Mexican sweet bread, so for 18 years I have been dreaming about going to those bakeries. The one bakery was my absolute favorite, it used to sell amazing fresh sweet breads, scone like with sprinkles, sweet whole grain, with a honey glaze and crunchy and sweet phyllo bread. This bakery has strange hours, and the bread sells out quickly, so in my dreams it is either closed or they won't sell me anymore bread. But the rare dreams that I find the bread, I buy tree bags of everything.

The other bakery closed for a couple of years, and it has different bread. This bakery has this bread that is shaped like a shell, filled with sweet and light cream, they also have a shortbread shaped like a U, with each end dipped in chocolate and this sweet and most muffins. Because this bakery closed and moved at some point, in my dreams I walk back and forth between one street and another, and when I find it I have to give them a secret code to come in. And then I fill a tray with bread and run home to eat it.

Out of all the dreams, the one that stresses me out the most is the bread dream. It is such torture to see the bread in my dream, to imagine the flavor and smells and never be able to eat it. I also know that this is my minds way of telling me I need visit my home country soon, and my brain has been rolling me this great at least once per week for 3 months.

Do you have any re-occuring dreams?

Tell me about it!

Have you ever overslept for a big event?

What is your favorite type of sweet bread or pastry?

  1. How long have you lived in the States? I'm a big believer in finding significant meaning in our dreams. My recurring dream is that I am on a large ferry boat with my family, and it starts to rock and I get tossed overboard and I'm swimming hard underneath the boat, trying to find something to hold onto while the boat crashes and lurches around me. I also have a dream that I am on an airplane with my family and it loses control, we spiral downward (in my dream, even my ears pop from the air pressure changes) and just as we hit the ground I wake up.

    1. I have live in the States for 20 years now.

Wow!! Your dreams are quite interesting, so if I was psychoanalyzing you, I would say that you are afraid of something awful happening to your family and you not being able to help them... But I don't have a degree in Psychology, it could just mean you don't like boats of planes.

    1. It is so delicious ! It stresses me out, because it's the one that is not easily fixable... I need to go to Mexico and eat it, then come back here and crave it all over again.

  3. Okay sorry if this comment shows up twice! I wanted to say I have the same college dream as you do too. I also often dream that I show up for work or a family function or pretty much anywhere in public not fully dressed! I don't believe dreams mean something or tell us something, I just think they are our random thoughts! Or maybe I just think that because my dreams never told me anything.

    1. I think they are memories stuck on our subconscious, or fears stuck there too. I used to have crazy dreams that would predict something that would happen later, it was creepy. Once I dreamed that I saw a person being stabbed on the chest with a sword, and when that happened in the dream, this huge sadness took over me. The next day, I called my family to see how things were, and found out that a friend of the family died of a heart attack that night of my dream. I had another one, but it's way too sad to share it here. Ask me if you remember and I'll tell you.

  4. I used to have 3 recurring dreams: one was always in an elevator that took me on a wild ride (like the one in Willy Wonka); another was that my teeth were falling out; and the other was that I showed up to work naked! Pretty sure these all have to do with anxiety.

    1. I read that the teeth falling out means something, just can't remember where. My brother has that dream often.

That is a very interesting mix of recurring dreams!
