Pittsburgh and Millersburg Ferry

This past holiday weekend we crossed off two items of our Pennsylvania's Best Views, We visited Pittsburgh and Millersburg.

On Saturday we took the long drive to Pittsburgh for the Incline. It was a long drive, filled with Starbucks stops.

Double Purpose Frapp, using it to ice my shin splints
** Tourist Warning** Duquesne Incline does not accept Credit cards. It's EXACT CHANGE ONLY, and there is no ATMs on the lower station, or nearby.

We counted our quarters and headed up the incline. The wait and rude incline attendants were absolutely worth the view on top!

We climbed down the mountain after lunch and headed to explore some of Pittsburgh.

On Monday, we headed to Millersburg to check out the ferry. Megan graciously answered my questions about the ferry and other attractions around, thank you!

This time we brought cash to pay for the Ferry. There were a group of motorcycles and two cars riding the ferry to the other side of the river.

I have lived in Pennsylvania for almost 20 years, and had never been on a boat on the Susquehanna, and this made me realize that I was missing out on an amazing experience!

We had ice cream after the ferry, it was delicious!

After the ferry, we wanted to stop by the Appalachian Trail we had spotted on our way in, and the Halifax Overlook.

We hiked a small section of the Appalachian Trial, and caught a few other amazing views.

We think that is Big Boyd Tree Preserve, but were not sure

I will do another post of other places we have checked off our list, and possibly another post about our PA Bucket List.

What are some amazing views in your state?
What are places you just have to see in your state?
Tell me one bucket list item from your state, that you have seen/done / eaten.

  1. I am glad you enjoyed the ferry!! I know Millersburg is out of the way which seemed like a huge pain to me when I was a teenager, but looking back I am glad I grew up there. I wonder if my friend Zach was working at Daniel's when you were there? Big smiley guy. I grew up doing theater with him.

Man do you get Around! How do you have so much energy on the weekend? We did the incline a long time ago. I feel like I would be too scared to do it now. On my bucket list for views is the kinzua bridge.

    1. Millerstown was a nice town! we walked around by the river and some of the downtown. I didn't think it was out of the way, it reminded me of Oxford Pa, the town where we moved to when we came to US.

The cashier was a very friendly and very tall guy, and very smiley! maybe it was him.

My dad and My Grandfather (on my moms side) were never able to stand still for very long. They both traveled all over in Mexico, and my family jokes that I inherited their inability to stay still. Plus, all I see all day is the wall by my desk, I have to get out during the weekend!

Kinzua is on our list too! Centralia and Ohiopyle too... along with a few others.

  2. I didn't realize you've lived in PA for 20 years! I love exploring here, there is so much beauty! Bushkill falls was a favorite scenic activity as well as Ricketts Glen. I also love boating. We have a boat but don't take it out often. I don't visit Pittsburgh that often because my husband works there and it seems counter productive to make the drive back in over the weekends!

    1. Yes, moved here in 1997.

Bushkill is in our list too, maybe we can still go this fall, but we want to go to Ricketts Glenn too! never enough time! you are right, there is just so many amazing views and nature here.

It's a shame that you don't visit Pittsburgh often! Have you done any races there?

  3. We learned the same thing about the incline the hard way. And thought the attendants were a bit rude too. But the views were absolutely worth it!

    1. Chaitali, I feel there should be a huge sign or something saying "bring exact cash!" Roger suggested we leave, but we had already paid for parking.

  4. The view from the incline is just fantastic! Sorry about the rude attendants. There is still so much of Alaska that I have yet to explore. I really hope we can go to Fairbanks sometime this year and do Denali and maybe Juneau next summer.

  5. I live in Illinois, so I'd have to say the best view here is from the top of the Sears, I mean Willis Tower. It's actually quite amazing! On a clear day you can see really far.

  6. AH! It has been YEARS since I rode the incline, but I RUN up the road to Mt. Washington a few times a year and it's always a killer, but you feel so satisfied when you take a break at the top.

So I haven't been, but it's on my PA Bucket List is the PA Grand Canyon! Esp if I could go during fall!
