Friday Five - Mexican Independence edition

Viva Mexico! Today is Mexican Independence day! Or at least it's when our independence war was declared... Technically we were not independent from Spain until 1820.

So today my Friday five are five things that I still miss about Mexico

1. Family and friends - of course my number one. I have aunts, uncles, cousins, the guy who owned the store where we bought our tortas, the taco guy in the corner.

2. Taco stands on every corner - yes, this one was real in my hometown. There were many taco stands, all very close to each other, it was the most magical thing ever !

3. Fruit stands (and other snack stands). Whenever I'm hungry and on my way to soccer, I always wish for a giant cup of mango chunks with lime and chile. Bags of garbanzos, or peanuts!!

4 Mexican bakeries. No additional other comment needed

5. Fresh fruits, veggies, meat and tortillas. - I used to dream about buying fresh tortillas and meat!! The meat in Mexico tasted so good !

Viva Mexico!!

What would you miss from your life if you had to move somewhere else?

  1. As you know, I teach ESL so I actually think of this topic often. I wonder what things these kids must miss from home. I think missing family would be the hardest.

    1. Meranda, Missing family is hard, I missed them a lot. I missed my house, my friends, the easiness of life. When we first moved here everything was new and scary. When we moved here we had very little stuff, so I missed dumb things, like my one pair of shoes I didn't bring, my one cassette tape, my old boombox.

Ask you students, I bet is different for each of them.

  2. Happy Independence Day! I like that you will mostly miss food. :) I would miss my family of course and maybe the smells. Does PA have a smell?

    1. Muchas Gracias SeƱora ! I know! I realized after I posted that I missed food the most. At first I missed my grandparents so much that it hurt! now that they have both passed, I tell myself that they come to visit me... because I want to believe they are ghost.

PA does smell... depending on where you are. Hershey of course smells of chocolate, chocolate an cow poop. Harrisburg smells of river and fried food. Chester county stinks of mushroom farms, Lancaster smells of cow poo. Philly smells of light sewage and fried onions.

  4. I love food!! maybe that's why I run, to avoid looking like a donut!

I would miss the waterfront of Baltimore, but that's just because they have that awesome Spanish restaurant!
