September Books
Happy Tuesday! What a busy month of books it has been! I enjoyed the link up so much last month! and added at least 10 more books to my TBR list.
Today I'm linking up with Jana and Steph for Show Us Your Books.
Last month I met my reading goal for the year, so I added 10 more. I get very nervous of not meeting that goal, so it is not very ambitious. So I'm going for 60 books.
Does The Noise Inside My Head Bother You? By Steven Tyler
This book was so great! this book kept jumping from one subject to another, it was almost like having a conversation with a person with little attention span. But Steven Tyler does say from the beginning that this is how things roll in his mind. I really loved the parts where he would talk about how much he loved Joe Perry and about his fights with Perry's girlfriends. I have liked Aerosmith for a long time, but I have a new appreciation for their status as Rock Stars.
Cress by Marissa Meyer
Book #3 of the Lunar Chronicles, and my favorite. Maybe because it was wrapping up the stories together more. I could not put this book down. This is the Re-imagined story of Rapunzel, and adding to the adventures of Cinder and Scarlett, and a brief appearance from Winter.
Bridge To Terabithia by Katherine Paterson
I picked this up with the intention of listening to it with my son. But he didn't have any interest in it. So listed to it at work. This book broke me. I was all into hearing the made up stories of Terabithia and the kid's adventures and then, BAM! Something awful happens. It was a good book, and I will read it with my son again later this year.
The Julian Chapter: A Wonder Story by Raquel J Palacio
I read Wonder last year, and really enjoyed the story. So this year I started the book with my son again in the summer. He loved it! When we found The Julian Chapter, we were both very curious to know more about Julian and his bullying ways.
The first half of the book was Julian explaining why he was mean to Auggie, the kid from Wonder with the face deformities. He claimed that Auggie gave him nightmares, because as a child he was afraid of scary faces, his parents were pretty awful, and enabled him to be a bully, without wanting to, but without making him face consequences for his actions. This caused me to be so angry the first half of the book, and I read to my son with a knot in my stomach and so much frustration.
The second half of the book completely destroyed me. I cried so hard!
Winter by Marissa Meyer
Right after finishing Cress, I had to go to the library and get Winter, and while it was a bit long and dragged in some parts, the last book of the series did not disappoint. At times the story felt a little like Mockingjay with the mutations and the going into the general population to start the revolution, but I enjoyed it.
The Passenger by Lisa Lutz
This was a recommendation from my friend Megan. I enjoy a good mystery, and this book kept me on my toes. The book starts with a woman who just found her husband dead, after falling down the steps, and she takes off, because she doesn't want anybody to dig into her past, worried of what could be uncovered. Most of the book she is on the run, always looking over her shoulder. I liked the suspense of what was going to happen next, but found the main character to be a little dumb. I found myself yelling at the book, whenever she did dumb things... and she did a few.
A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini
His other book, The Kite Runner, broke me! And a friend from work recommended this one. This book is about the life of Mariam, and Laila. Mariam marries Rasheed through arrangement from her Stepmothers(?), and has to suffer from Rasheeds domestic abuse, both physical and mental. Later on, he marries Laila, who had no other option due to her circumstances. I'm trying to not give too much away!
This book was really good. I always find it that reading books about the suffering of other women all over the world keeps me grounded. As in, yes somebody cut me off on my way to work today, but I am fortunate to have a job, and the liberties I have.
I will have less books next moth, but that's fine, the books I have so far are really good.

I need to read Julian's story; I LOVED Wonder and I can't wait for the movie. Cress is one of my favorites from the Lunar Chronicles; I still need to read Winter, but I DO own it so I'm one step closer. haha

Julian's Story was such a great book!! I highly recommend it.
DeleteYes the character in the passenger was dumb! I don't know why anyone would want to be on the run like that. The book made me very uncomfortable.
ReplyDeleteI think she made me anxious! I kept thinking "Don't trust Blue!!" I was sure the last twist would be related to Blue!
DeleteI enjoyed The Passenger and loved A Thousand Splendid Suns.
ReplyDeleteI haven't read Wonder yet but it's on my list!
Wonder is an amazing book ! YOu have to check it out!
DeleteI loved The Lunar Chronicles! Did not put together the Mockingjay comparisons at all though, lol.
ReplyDeleteI only put it together because I read Mockingjay 4 times!!
DeleteBridge to Terabithia is one of my favorite books. I know there was a movie recently but I couldn't bring myself to see it because I was worried they wouldn't do it justice.
ReplyDeleteI looked up an interview with the Author, and her son helped produce it. I have no intention of watching the movie though... too sad.
Deleteyay for cress and winter! i think cress was probably my least favourite lol and i adored winter. i've been craving a re-read of that series.
ReplyDeleteI want to say that Scarlett and Iko were my favorite! I wish they would make it a TV series!
DeleteI loved the Lunar Chronicles. Cinder was my favorite but I am always a sucker for beginnings. :D And I do recommend Stars Above which has a bunch of short stories set in the Lunar Chronicles world with one story taking place a couple years after the events of Winter. Generally, I am not a fan of short stories but I really enjoyed these. I also did a lot of yelling and rolling my eyes throughout the Passenger. She did a lot of dumb things. Over and over. And over and over.
ReplyDeleteI am going to look up the other books, I want to know what else is going to happen ! I ordered the Levanna book from the library.
DeleteYOu got it!! Over and Over, and over and over!
Ok so I really need to read the Lunar Chronicles. Everyone raved about them for so long and I just never got to them. I do think Ill give them a read though.
ReplyDeleteStart out with Cinder, and that will get you hooked on the series... it got me hooked.
DeleteOh - I'm so glad RJ Palacio wrote the Julian chapter - Wonder was so good but I knew there had to be more to the bully's backstory. I'm looking forward to seeing the movie. Thousand Splendid Suns is in my bookshelf but I keep bumping it for other reads - I need to get it back towards the top of the stack!
ReplyDeleteThe Julian Chapter is a killer! The part of it that was not making me angry, made me cry. Great book!
DeleteStart one chapter at a time with Thousand, it's a long book and a difficult read.
The Passenger sounds really good! I always like reading books like that in the fall, especially close to Halloween!
ReplyDeleteIf you like suspense, check out Passenger, it will keep you guessing!
DeleteI love the way she's expanding the Wonder books. I really want my daughter to read them given how amazing Wonder was.
ReplyDeleteThe Passenger has been on my list forever.
I love that she makes the other character's chapters relatable! It's a really though subject, but she made it relatable. I read it with my son, and he loved both books.
DeleteA Thousand Splendid Suns was a great book! I need to read the Julian chapter since I loved Wonder so much. I have only read the first book in the Lunar Chronicles. I am so behind on that series!
ReplyDeleteDo check out Julian, the story is heartbreaking!
DeleteI absolutely loved The Kite Runner, but haven't had the chance to pick up A Thousand Splendid Suns. I definitely need to try and read it sooner rather than later!
ReplyDeleteBoth of his books are great and give a great perspective on what is happening on other parts of the world.
DeleteWoohoo, lots of reading. Glad you loved Cress and enjoyed Winter. I think it's hard to ever like the last of a series the most... or fully...because no one wants it to end.... and last books are often battles or confrontations of bad guys, etc. Just not the happiest. I liked Cress a lot, but Scarlet was my favorite. Partly just because I think I liked Wolf and Scarlet best. :) XO - Alexandra
ReplyDeleteSimply Alexandra: My Favorite Things
I made it my job to finish as many books as possible!!
DeleteI like Scarlett best too! she was so feisty! but I did not love Wolf as much. I liked Jacin, he sounded hot!
you totally nailed it on the battles and confrontations! They were all over the place!
I remember reading Bridge to Terabithia in 4th grade. It is pretty sad, I wouldn't read it again.
ReplyDeleteI don't know if there is a really sad book that I wouldn't read again... now I'm going to have to think about it!
DeleteI remember getting annoyed with the main character in The Passenger too, but overall I enjoyed it. I picked up A Thousand Splendid Suns right after I finished The Kite Runner and even though I LOVED his writing style, I haven't read this one yet. I really want to read Wonder (and then this one!) before the movie comes out. I set my reading goal low for the same reason- congrats on reaching (and surpassing) it!
ReplyDeleteYes, check out Wonder now! the books is going to be a lot better than the movie!! it's a quick, but rewarding, book!
