November Books

I was fresh off a lot of amazing books last month, as I said before, I love this link up group! I get so many great recommendations, and find amazing books every month.

Today I'm linking up with Jana and Steph for Show Us Your Books.

Stars Above by and Fairest Marisa Meyer ( 3 * / 5 *)

I was waiting for a lot of things from the library, so I looked up Stars Above. I really enjoyed the short stories and follow up on the Lunar Chronicle group. I had read an interview with the Author, and when she said to expect a wedding, I was ready for a different wedding, but still happy with how the book went.

The wait was over! I finally got Fairest from the library! It felt perfectly timed to the end of the Lunar Chronicles. This book was the story of Levanna, the villain of the Lunar Chronicles series. I wanted to like this book more, but there was not much to learn about Levenna, or to understand. Every now and then, there would be a small glimpse of the root of her cruelness, but it would not fully materialize. I still enjoyed the different look at her, and was glad to have read the book.

To All The Boys I've Ever Loved and PS I Still Love You by Jenny Han  ( 3 * / 5 *)

I have been looking at this book for a while, but the tittle sounded a little cheesy. I had nothing else, so I checked it out. I really enjoyed it, the author captured the teen antsy and personality in a touching way. But I did figure out right away who sent the letters. I liked the book.

This was the follow up to her other book, it was quite enjoyable and funny. It also covered some cyber Bullying, and wrapped up a story from the book before.

We Should All Be Feminist by Chimamada Ngozi Adichie  ( 4 * / 5 *)

This wasn't really a book, it was more of an essay. A very enjoyable essay and a great introduction to feminism. I loved it, but I wish it was 200 pages longer.

The Good Daughter by Karin Slaughter  ( 3 * / 5 *)

This book had two "who dun it ?" stories going at the same time. I figured out one a quarter of the way, and was very suspicious of the right character from the beginning.

The characters were not that exciting for me, and all were very predictable. I still enjoyed it, and might check out other of her books.

I am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter by Erika Sanchez  ( 4 * / 5 *)

There isn't many books about growing up as a Mexican daughter, so I was glad to have found this, and even happier that the book was really good.

Mexican Daughter is the story of Julia, whose perfect sister just died. She now has to navigate with grief, pressure from her Mexican parents to be perfect, depression, and her sister's secrets. The book was funny, and heartbreaking, but ended full of hope, or everything that a book is supposed to be.

Everything I never Told You by Celeste Ng  ( 4 * / 5 *)

This book broke me. All the main characters on this book were so devastatingly sad. The story starts with a punch, somebody is dead and the book will go back and forth with the theory of was it a suicide, murder or an accident. This book is going to hunt me.

One Of Us is Lying by Karen McManus  ( 5 * / 5 *)

Finally! Another great suspense book! I saw this book on the link up a few months ago, and ordered it from the library.

This book is about 5 high school kids in detention, and only 4 walk out alive. I never saw the Breakfast Club, but I've seen references to it on other reviews.

I really enjoyed this book! this is really cruel, but it was not hard to see why somebody would want to kill the one kid, he ran a Gossip Girl style blog, in which he was cyberulling his classmates, but then for me the question became, he was a terrible person, but does that mean that somebody should kill him? Even thought I saw the twist coming half way through the book, it still felt fresh, and very cruel. This was easily one of my favorite books this year.

Elanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman  ( 3 * / 5 *)

I also ordered this after reading a review in the link up.

This book took a while to get going, but once it did, it was dark and quite enjoyable. I cried at the end when the whole story about the Mom and sister were revealed.

The One And Only Ivan by KA Applegate  ( 5* / 5 *)

I found this book in the last link up, and was so happy to have found it.

This is the story of Ivan, who lives in a Zoo Themed Mall with other animals.

This was a beautiful book, I read it with my son. He LOVED it! and I did too. I cried, and my son said it was really sad. He didn't like that one of the characters died, but we cried tears of happiness at the very end.

This Month so far has been a bit slower with the books, but I'm happy to have met my goal for the year on books.

  5. I am generally not a huge short story fan but I loved Stars Above. Maybe because I really loved everyone in Lunar Chronicles? I did not read Fairest but I honestly didn't really care to learn more about Levanna. One of Us is Lying is on my TBR and may need to bump it up in priority. I thought Pretty Girls was better than The Good Daughter which never hooked me in the same way. Adding The Perfect Mexican Daughter to my TBR. It sounds really good!

  11. We have such similar tastes! I loved Adichie's TED talk, but had to read the book, too. It's just so good. I have some of her other books in my TBR list, but I think they're all fiction. I loved that Jenny Han's series, Everything I never Told You, and One of Us is Lying. I'm on the hold list for Eleanor and I'm adding I am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter! My son is really into Applegate's books so we'll have to read Ivan together.
