Friday Five- The Races That Were Not Meant To BE

Happy Friday! Today I want to talk about the races that never were... anybody who reads this blog knows that I am a huge fan of running races, but there have been a few that got away from me that I really have wanted to do. Most recently, the Hershey 10K scheduled for this Saturday.

I'm Linking up with the Friday five 2.0 ladies at Fairytales and Fitness and Running on Happy .

I have been fortunate to have my health and no severe injuries, but other things have kept me away from this races. However, this week I have hit my record of races that I will not be doing this year... read on to find out.

Garden Spot Half Marathon 2018- I have had my eye on this race for two years, but scheduling has never worked in my favor. This year it wasn't ideal, but I was ready to commit. And when I went to sing up, the half marathon had sold out. I was really disappointed, I had already secured somebody to watch my kid, and was ready to run those hills.

Buck Ridge 5K 2018- I have also been eyeing this one for at least 2 years. The elevation for the half marathon sounds like a killer, so I had my eye set on the 5K. Except when I went to register on Monday, it was also sold-out.

Hershey 10K 2018- I have been singed up for this race since January. However, the weather was calling for snow and high winds. So today, we received an email that the race was canceled. I am very disappointed and sad... I was so ready to run this race!

Virginia Beach RnR Half marathon- aahhh!! another weather related one ! I had trained in heat and humidity for this race, and while the race was not cancelled, it was not advisable to travel down to Virginia the day before because of Hurricane Hermine, which is when we were scheduled to drive there. I still ran 13.1 miles that morning, but didn't have the Race atmosphere I wanted.

Bunny Palooza 10K 2016- This one I had to miss because I had the flu. On the morning that we were supposed to be running the 10K, my son and I were both in bed with a fever of 102. I got my redemption and ran it in 2017.

Since the weather has changed and we will likely not get any rain, or snow, we will still be running a 10K on Saturday morning... an unofficial 10K, but we will run. I'm still sad about it, but if it wasn't meant to be, it just wasn't meant to be.

I hope you are enjoying a wonderful Friday!

tell me about races that you have missed and why? and how did you feel about it.

  1. I've been lucky not to miss any races yet.

But I've come really, really close a couple of times when my Dad get extremely sick right before a race. In one case he needed surgery, but it wouldn't be for weeks, and in the other, they thought he might need surgery but he didn't.

In both cases it was extremely stressful, though.

Patrick, I tried to comment on your blog, but it keeps blocking me out, and saying I'm a robot... I really did read your post.

  3. Oh my,,, so sorry the Hershey 10k got cancelled. I didn't realize the weather was suppose to be that bad. How far in advance did they cancel it? I'm glad I got to run it last year.

    1. I know! No, it wasn't rescheduled, it was just cancelled. At first they were not offering refunds, and people were mad! especially because the weather was not as bad as predicted.

I know! I'm sad I missed out on the 5k, now I know to sign up early.

  5. Well, I did have a couple races I had to miss out on last summer due to my unexpected surgery. Fortunately, I only had two races that I had registered for...but there were several others I had planned on doing (and would have run had I not been in recovery for three months LOL). There was a race a couple years ago, though, that I chose to DNS because my body was feeling run down and I had an ultra happening a couple weeks later that was more of a priority. Missing out on races sucks, but usually it's always for the better (you know...in that grand-scheme-of-life sort of way). Sorry about the Hershey 10K...bummer!

    1. It is so annoying to miss races!! Yes, in the grand scheme of things, it's not a big deal there are many other things happening that are more important. It is just sad to miss out on races.

  6. I've missed a few races, especially last year when I was recovering from RA. Both are races I'm sad about--Grandma's Marathon (maybe I'll go back) and RockNRoll Las Vegas (not sure about that one).

  7. It's so frustrating when you go to sign up for a race and its sold out! Most of the races I have missed were due to injuries.

  8. The biggest race that has eluded me is the London Marathon. I had the opportunity to sign up for it way back in 2000 when I lived in England, but I was too afraid to pull the trigger. Now I get in the lottery every year but it's virtually impossible to get a spot. Sigh.
The weather has wreaked havoc on races lately!
