What I have learned about running in two years

5K, 10K, 3.1, 6.2, 13.1, 26.2, bib, tech shirts, training, PR, sprints, hill training, splits, carb loading, ct5K, ultramarathon…. And so many I more I can’t remember. I started running just for fun, my sister and I did a 5K… I honestly didn’t know how long a 5K was, just knew I had to run it. We did well, but people started asking me things, that I didn’t know how to answer “What was your time?” what ? Time? We started at 9:30 and finished at 10:02… that time? “What was your pace?” I was going slowish…. That pace? “how was your split?” I went running, there was no splitting. “Was this a PR for you?” A PR? Puerto Rican Rice? Where I want some, now please. Carb loading? Why, yes please! I have learned a few things, mostly by trial and error. I have learned others by researching and others by reading books, magazines and blogs. Here is a few things that now I know 5K (Kilometers) - is a 5 Kilometers run, or 3.10 miles. My most popular run! I like to tell people how far 3 ...

Running in Costumes

Image
Running in Costumes Last year I ran the Harrisburg Hero Run dressed at El Chapulin Colorado, to my knowledge there is not many Mexican Super Heroes, I appreciate and love comic book heroes, Wonder Woman totally rocks those shorts and boots, Batman broodiness is super rock and roll and I will never deny the appeal of Chris Evans as Captain America, but neither appealed to me in thinking of a super Hero costume. In Mexico, We have El Chapulin Colorado, a parody of superhero shows, and I was determined to run dressed as him for the Hero run. Lucky for me, Trick of Treat weekend was the same as the Hero run, and The Art In Motion Fitness Halloween Party was that Sunday as well….. I got a lot of mileage of the $18 costume!! This year, I was inspired and have wanted to do more runs in costume, just because it gets me thinking of costumes, working on them and adding to the fun of the run. First run this year was the Irish Jig Jog Run, with a costume contest. I wanted to dress u...

Exhausting 3 days!

Half way to Marathon Training I have been training for the Hershey Half Marathon for 2 months now. I signed up back in June, knowing I would have to train hard for the October race. There have been other things I didn’t consider, and are still trying to learn. Yesterday I learned a good lesson; rest can make or break a long run. I am divorced and share custody of my son with his father. We have a strange schedule that allows us both to see our son for a few days alternating each week. And that means, I train when I’m alone, sometimes 3 consecutive days of training, with a race in between, but also 3 days of no activity or training at all. This weekend, I had to train for 3 days and overdid it and now I’m paying for it. On Friday, I had off from work, and it was a beautiful day. Roget and I decided to go hiking to Swatara State Park. The Park has 24 miles of trails, and the Appalachian Trail goes by it. We both thought, without telling each other, we would do about 4 miles ...

The day she left.

The day She left The news had nothing to report on her passing this morning. The news had nothing to say of the impact of her life on so many of us, but her children, her grandchildren, we will always remember our beloved grandmother. Ninfa Diaz. Our beautiful Ninfita, the most beautiful grandmother we could have ever asked for. My grandmother was 92, she was born and raised in El Moro, a small rancho of Yuriria Guanajuato. She was married at 14, and had her first son my Tio Manuel at 15. My mom was her 5 th child. She was a hardworking mother, a kind woman and a brave soul. I had the immense pleasure to live with her for two summers of my life, when I was 5 and 6. The age of my son, at the current time. She used to get up at the crack of dawn to go to El Molino and get started on her daily chores. Once I was talking to her on the phone, I work at a place where I have to be at work at 7:30 am, which is a little early for some of the jobs. At the time I was starting at 7:00 ...

The day before the Hershey 10K

Late post- written Friday 410.15., edited and posted Monday 4.13.15 . The day before the run The day is almost here! All the preparation, including the food, the runs, the mental notes… all for tomorrow. I signed up for the 10K on February, I decided I was doing the run in January. All came from a conversation I had with my ex-husband two years ago. He told me that there was a run that went through Hershey Park, and the time I was intrigued, but didn’t research it. Last year I remembered and looked d it up and it had passed. Early this year, with the resolution to do more runs, I found the Hershey run, and got a little scared at finding out it was a 10K. I did several 5Ks last year, so I thought I was ready for a 10K.   Training started in January, small short runs, 1 mile, then 1.5. Worked to 2 miles, then after I registered, I went full on training, increasing my mileage each week. My best run was 5.75 miles, and I felt good after it. My last run was 5.15, and it was a h...

New obsession

New time of my life, new frustration, and new obsession. I am totally hooked on Enrique Bunbury’s songs, mostly Aunque no sea contigo and Infinito. As I’m writing this I’m singing to the top of my lung “ que ninguno de esos idiotas te supieron hace feliiiz!!” Para los que no saben quien es Mr. Bunbury, just let me tell you first that you listen to too much pop or hip hop; not that is a bad thing, but you are missing out in Bunbury. Anyway, Mr. Bunbury is the ex-leader of the very popular Spanish (From Spain you menso, not Hispanic) Rock band Heroes del Silencio; and if you also don’t know who they are you are definitely missing out in good stuff here. It all started with “que tengas suertecita”, la cual yo creia era la major cancion; until I heard Aunque no sea conmigo…. Beautiful song about hear break and needing that special somebody to be happy, aunque no sea contigo!!! I want to cry just thinking about it. And just like any other obsessions of mine, I dream about meeting Mr. Bunbu...
